Frustular Series
These works, completed in 2023 for my exhibition Diatomaceous Earth and the Soft Machine, grew out of experimental pieces I began in 2021. They started as open-ended explorations, with no clear sense of resolution, and gradually evolved into amalgamated forms. Their structures draw on images of diatoms as seen under electron microscopy, their granular silica exoskeletons echoed in my use of a high-alumina glaze. Many of the forms emerged directly from process: while punching holes into clay slabs, I kept the tiny balls of clay without knowing how I might use them only to find they eventually became integral to these works. In this way, the series continues my fascination with the dialogue between the extremely small and the extremely large.
