No Signal, 2017
The ongoing Noise series is created using a layered subtractive technique involving multiple applications of tape and paint. I start by cutting masking tape into 3–4 mm wide strips and applying them to the canvas. After the initial paint layer is applied, I add additional tape in new configurations, and apply further layers of paint. This process is repeated over four to five iterations, allowing the composition to build complexity through both addition and removal. Once the final layer is dry, I remove the tape to expose the underlying structure, revealing a precise interplay of masked and painted surfaces. It was begun for the exhibition No Signal and refers to the profound discovery that the static or white noise of an untuned analogue television set contains the left over signal from the birth of our universe.
