Surface Detail, 2015
These four paintings, The Long View, Breach, Lost, and Lost (filter) were created for my 2015 exhibition Surface Detail. Depicting satellites, planetary probes, and the lunar lander, they emerged from a deep interest in both science fiction and science itself. These mechanical explorers designed to gather data, map alien terrain, or extend the reach of human curiosity became for me poignant emblems of isolation.
I wrote at the time about the loneliness of the Mars rover, diligently navigating a desolate landscape millions of kilometres from home. That same emotional charge underpins these paintings: the quiet journey of the Voyager probes as they drift beyond the heliosphere; the forgotten fragments of space junk endlessly circling Earth, no longer purposeful yet still tethered to our history. These images explore not only technological achievement but also the pathos embedded in our attempts to reach beyond ourselves, our machines becoming lone sentinels in the vast, indifferent silence of space.
